The capacity of agricultural production systems to adapt to an environment undergoing complete change is a real challenge, particularly in the Global South where vulnerability to climate change is high. Thanks to new research tools, innovations can help agriculture in the Global South adapt, become more competitive and expand into new markets.

The 4-phenylbutyric acid (4PBA), or one of its salts, can be used to improve plant resistance to phytopathogen among bacteria, virus and nematodes. It also can be used as an antimicrobial agent to prevent or treat plant diseases. The 4PBA can be applied using an aqueous solution, on seeds, soils, on aerial parts the plant, roots, and on the harvested material to guaranty better storage.

Ranked as the second most important phytopathogenic bacteria worldwide, the agent Ralstonia solanacearum causes potato brown rot and bacteria wilt in solanaceous crops and cucurbit crops. It is also the first pest in vegetables crops in Martinique. The phytosanitary situation is further compounded by the emergence of an ecotype of R. solanacearum (PhylIIB/seq4NPB), which is able to break the resistance of the commercial varieties. Bacteria wilt may cause up to 100% of tomato crop losses. Without conventional treatment, fighting bacteria wilt is limited to prophylactic measures, which are inefficient under favorable conditions for the disease development.

This process pilots the quantitative and qualitative production of compounds by microorganisms, particularly spores from filamentous fungi, cultivated in solid state fermentation based and applying a controlled hydric stress. The technique uses a hermetic and static bioreactor, within which a vegetal based culture media with absorbent properties is placed. After adding a nutritive solution, the culture media is inoculated with the microorganism selected according to the targeted final product.
