Technology's description

Stemming from IRSTEA (National Institute of Sciences & Technology for Environment & Agriculture), this invention combines a Two-Phase-Secondary-Refrigerant & mixed hydrates, which are excellent Phase Change Materials. It is related to the hydrates, their method of preparation, the thermal energy storage devices (static or dynamic) & the device for the capture, storage & transportation of gas.
   -  This mixed hydrates invention combines water with a mixture of two or more salts. The different possible concentrations allow to achieve enthalpy values ranging from 200 to 500 kJ/kg. They exhibit intermediate properties allowing adjustments to the targeted operating conditions. As well, their processing and use are carried out at atmospheric pressure & dissociation temperatures from -18°C to 35°C. High enthalpy & customization make them ideal as a heat transfer fluid, both for static heat storage (container, capsule...) & dynamic heat storage (hydrate slurry). With this adjustment possibility, the application areas of secondary refrigeration such as distribution and storage are tremendously increased thanks to the possible temperatures and power levels of operations. Also, when processed as slurries, the mixed hydrates can effectively transport the cold and reduce the amount of refrigerant fluid used.
    -  Besides, mixed hydrates have the property to trap gases, it is thus possible to produce gaseous PCM materials (e.g. CO2). When melting, a pressure variation in the fluid is induced (gas released). Consequently, during the design of the PCM slurries, the actual viscosity and dissociation temperature can be adjusted to the targeted PCM specifications without changing initial PCM concentrations. As well, it is possible to transfer cold at higher temperatures reducing heat dissipation, then release the gas in order to decrease the temperature at the point of use. The gas can be recovered as well at this point.
