Technology offer : Diagnostic test for Amebiasis (E.histolytica)

Technology's description

Amebiasis is a major cause of parasitic dysentery in developing countries and is estimated to be second only to malaria as the leading cause of protozoan-related mortality worldwide. Infection with Entamoeba histolyticacan cause a wide range of manifestations ranging from asymptomatic carriage to amebic dysentery and amebic liver abscess. E.histolytica have been observed to cause infection in 48 million people worldwide.

Unfortunately current diagnostic methods are not suitable for a rapid field diagnostic. Indeed PCR and microscopic analysis require adapted equipments as well as trained staff.
Research from the Pasteur Institute in Paris, discovers a surface protein specific to E.histolytica, using monoclonal antibodies target against this specific antigen researchers developed a rapid diagnostic test. On the field the dipstick will be used on fecal sample to have a quick and reliable diagnosis of amebiasis.

From this discovery a specific ELISA test can also be developed for serological diagnosis of E.histolytica infection.
